  14. Changing the paths from .../fonts//tfm to just .../font// seems to
  15. reduce the numbers of stat()s made by between 30% and 50% depending on
  16. the directory layout.  With my currently minimal font setup for
  17. web2c-6.1 this changes startup time on a DEC-3000/400 from 1 second to
  18. .5 seconds (all over NFS to a slower box.)  Once started the TeX runs
  19. fine but I've already had complaints about the speed of starting the
  20. new TeX.

  22. I've mailed KB about this earlier with some of the obervations from
  23. trace.  I think he is looking at some of this.

  25. On another point does anyone have a sample MakeTeXTFM script that I
  26. can have a look at please?  I've written a simple one but I'd like to
  27. know what others do.
